Internet Smileys (or Emoticons)
Content Standard 1.
DESCRIPTION:
This computer activity introduces students to a new on-line form of
communication called smileys or emoticons. These are symbols used to
represent a wide variety of facial expressions to enhance the communication.
There are many that are used universally among internet users and others that
are made up to reflect a certain mood. They are usually easy to interpret.
GOAL:
Use the Internet for effective communication.
OBJECTIVES:
The learner will identify some of the most commonly used emoticons to
identify and clarify communication when using internet communication
programs.
TLW discuss the ways that facial expressions contribute to the meaning of
spoken speech. With the absence of facial interactions in on-line
communication, many smiley symbols representing various emotions have
been developed to help with understanding. If someone types something just
to be kidding, a smiley face :-) helps the reader know that the other person is
not serious.
TLW match the emoticon with the meaning.
TLW create at least one emoticon and its meaning and see if a classmate can
guess what emotion it expresses.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Students often use the internet to communicate in chat groups and by e-mail.
This will expose them to the most commonly used emoticons they might
encounter.
PROCEDURE:
1. Show a smiley face overhead
2. Ask them what human emotion it represents.
3. Make several facial expressions and see if students can interpret your
emotion/mood.
4. Discuss that when you are on-line people can not see you face to face but
must rely totally on what you type.
5. Define a smiley or an emoticon as a symbol typed to represent a human
emotion or feeling.
6. Show some of the emoticons and have the students interpret them.
7. Assign the students to design an original emoticon to show some emotion.
MATERIALS:
Computers, Worksheets, Overhead examples, "Kids On-Line"
ASSESSMENT:
Tests, matching worksheet, uniquely designed emoticons.
FOLLOW UP:
Students can use this new communication skill when in a chat room or when
sending e-mail. They will also share their own original emoticon with the
others in the class.
