Lesson Plan Telecommunications: e-mail
submitted by Sherry L. Wood
Northeast Middle School

DESCRIPTION:

This computer lesson will enable each student to establish a free e-mail account through a MSN (Microsoft Network). Even though some students already use e-mail frequently at home, many of our students still do not have easy access, if any, to the internet.

GOAL:

Students will use individual e-mail accounts to compose, send, and receive e-mail messages, links, and other attached documents.

OBJECTIVES:

Students will establish an e-mail account by submitting an application to www.hotmail.com

Students will choose a login name and password to protect their account.

Students will compose and send an e-mail to another student in the class.

Students will send an e-mail to another student they do not know by using the Student Member Directory.

Students will send a link in an e-mail.

Students will learn to save addresses for future use.

Students will learn to create new folders to organize their e-mail messages.

Students will learn to delete and edit e-mail messages.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

This lesson was developed because of my son who found out about hotmail.com and taught me how to use it. Nathan Louden, a sixth grader at Northeast '98-'99 was very instrumental in showing me the fine points of using this free e-mail service. Though there are many such services to choose from, this one is relatively easy to access and is widely used, especially among young people.

PROCEDURE:

1. Introduce the concepts to be taught.
2. Tie in to the previous lesson, "Rules of the Road"
3. Step through

8. Subject: (explain this is not required, but let's the person know what the message is about)
9. Tab down to the message box and type a message to someone.
10. When finished, choose SEND
11. If everything is done properly, a message saying the message was instantly delivered
will show up on the screen.

MATERIALS:

Computers, Internet Access, Handouts for instructions,

ASSESSMENT:

Students will actually send and receive e-mail messages correctly.

FOLLOW UP:

Students will expand their usage by sending a link, attachment, and learning how to save addresses into various folders. This can be done on an individual basis based on interest shown by the student. Show a few in each class individually and have them show someone else around them.

The teacher can also use the address create group option to instantly send e-mail messages to an entire group of students at one time. I have sent group instructions to each account to give students practice in using e-mail in a practical way. This would also be useful to e- mail lesson plans to other teachers, substitutes, or principals.

E-Mail Sherry!
