Title - Colorful Caterpillars
By - Luanne
Primary Subject - Computers / Internet
Secondary Subjects - Art
Grade Level - K-1
Materials: Computers, KidPix Deluxe

Step 1: Introduce to the students the tools to the left of the screen and select the circle tool. Point out to them that the tray at the bottom shows different circles with patterns to choose from. Also, point out the color selections to the left of the screen. Demonstrate that when a different color is selected, the circles at the bottom will also change color.

Step 2: Our caterpillar is about 5 or 6 circles across the page. Demonstrate the click and drag method to complete a circle.

Step 3: Drawing the 2nd circle will require a little hand coordination. Select a different color and pattern. Their drawing tool must be inside the first circle and up towards the top so that they are connected when they are finished. Click and drag to make the second circle.

Step 4: Continue changing colors and patterns until 5 to 6 circles have been made stretching across the page from left to right.

Step 5: With the Wacky Pencil I show them how to draw the face, antennae, legs. I fine that the round pencil works best. I point out to the students the different sizes available in the tray at the bottom of the screen. With a medium size pencil, just one click will add a nice eye and then another.

Step 6: Change to a slightly smaller pencil to add a round nose. With a smaller pencil, a little "v" or a smile can be added to finish the face.

Step 7: Adding the antennae is not difficult and using a medium size pencil, they can add the tops of the antennae easily. Legs are attached to the circles, 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top. You can bend them by making crooked lines.

Using the Alphabet tool, they can stamp their names. They have to be shown that there are 2 rows of letters.
