If you happened to purchase any Christmas candy canes at half price this is a great activity for you! Hot glue gun two candy canes together at the tips. They make a perfectly shaped heart. Then just use your imagination. I usually discuss the phrase "broken hearted" and they free write, but anything like that would be good. You could even discuss the symmetry in Math.

Extensions:
Another great idea would be create a simple Valentine card on construction paper (or posterboard) that would be smaller than the candy cane hearts. Then, glue the candy canes onto the construction paper; creating a candy cane Valentine. You could also have students bring in photos of themselves to place on the construction paper. Then put the candy canes on the construction paper to make a picture frame that could be given to their parents!
