Title - 9/11 Tapestry

I developed this lesson plan right after the 9/11 attack to help students express their feelings.
Materials:
An example of the Battle of Hastings from the Bayeux Tapestry
Pictures of the Twin Towers before the attack and other photos that depict the devastation and emotions of the people
Ruler
Drawing paper 12" X 24"
Markers, colored pencils, etc.
Students viewed and discussed the Battle of Hastings seen on the Bayeux Tapestry. The lesson took at least three 30-40 minute class periods.
1. Discuss the top border of the tapestry that is lined with creatures from Aesop's Fables.
2. The middle section actually depicts a battle scene from the Battle of Hastings. Students describe the action and identify William's army from Henry's army.
3. Students will then talk about the bottom border. Here people are gathering plunder from the dead (probably for profit). Students discuss how these people are going about this task while the battle is raging around them.
4. Discuss the events of September 11, 2001 with the students, providing a variety of pictures.
The 9/11 Tapestry:
Laying the paper horizontally, use the ruler to mark a line 3-inches from the top and then mark a line 3-inches from the bottom. The results should be three sections: a 3-three inch section at the top, a 6-inch section in the middle and another 3-inch section on the bottom.
SECTION ONE: Students will create symbols that stand for America and create a pattern that moves across the top section.
SECTION TWO: Students will draw pictures depicting what happened before, during and after the attack on the Twin Towers. It will read much like a comic strip in that the action will move from left to right.
SECTION THREE: Students will discuss and draw things that people in other parts of the United States were doing during the attack. An example would be people on the west coast were just getting up. Some people were at work, some were in school, etc.
When the project is finished, display it as one long banner down the school hall before the September 11 Remembrance.
