Title: What's Inside the Egg?

GRADE LEVEL: 1st

MATERIALS NEEDED: copies of egg outlines, crayons, markers, scissors, glue, different colored pieces of construction paper

NUMBER OF CLASS HOURS: 50 minutes (10 minutes pre-assessment, 30 minutes for project, and 10 minutes for post-assessment)

CONCEPTS: Students will learn about eggs and certain animals that hatch from eggs. They will cut out and decorate their own eggs and decide which animal they want to hatch from their egg. Students will then demonstrate their artwork for the class.

OBJECTIVES: Link with Science. Students will be instructed in the cutting and coloring of their eggs. The students will build their vocabulary through terms relating to art and science. Art content standards: 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. Additional Science standards.

MOTIVATIONAL TOOLS: Discussion on what eggs are and what kinds of animals come from eggs. Show the children the poster and see if they recognize any of the animals on the poster.

PROCESS/PROCEDURE: 1.) Hang up poster and let the kids gather around. Give them a little time to look at the poster, then start the discussion on eggs and what animals come from eggs. 2.) Introduction of terms. 3.) Provide cautions. 4.) Show students different examples of project. 5.) Have the students pick up their construction paper in a color that they choose. 6.) Students will color an animal that they choose (as long as this animal comes from an egg) in the open egg; they will then decorate the shell of the other egg. 7.) Cut out both eggs along the black lines. 8.) Glue the egg with the picture of the animal to the construction paper. 9.) Glue the broken shell to the shell with the picture by gluing only in areas marked "glue."

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: Students will display artwork to class. Students will be asked questions to prompt discussion. An oral quiz will be given covering the material discussed in class.
