By - Christy Zoulek
Primary Subject - Art
Secondary Subjects - Science
Grade Level - K-2
Materials:
Egg cartons, Tempera Paint, Paint Brushes,
White paper.
Prep:
Cut each egg carton in half, so that each carton makes 2 palettes for 6 colors, fill egg cartons with paint in this manner: back row-yellow, yellow, blue; front row-blue, red, yellow. Cover tables with newspaper. Place water for washing brushes at each table so that all students can reach.
Procedure:
Discuss with students primary and secondary colors. Discuss the rules and procedures of painting, Stress the importance of cleaning the paintbrush between colors.
Each student may come forward and get a paintbrush, a carton full of paint, and a paper towel to clean their brush. Instruct students to keep brushes out of paint until everyone is ready to start.
Have all students with a clean paint brush hold them in the air, and when the are all ready, instruct them to put their paint into the blue paint and gently swirl it around. Put the brush with the blue paint into the yellow behind the red and stir it up. (if they put it into a different yellow, it won't make a big difference, as long as they still have 2 clean yellows left) What color did you make????
Have students paint a shape on their paper with their new color, then wash brushes well, and hold clean brushes once again, in the air. When everyone is ready, have students place their brush in the red paint and swirl it around. Put the red brush in the yellow behind the blue and stir it up. What color did you make???
Paint a shape with the new color, wash brush, hold it up, and mix red into the blue behind the yellow.
When students have mixed all of the secondary colors from the primaries, allow them to paint a picture with their paints.
When it is time to clean up, have students close the carton and write their name on their palettes with a marker and set them aside to dry.
The following week, students may take palettes home, and they can be used similarly to watercolor paints.
Assessment:
If students have followed directions, colors will be arranged according to complimentary color pairs.
If students have washed their brushes well, no one should have "mud"
