Title – April Showers – Bring Me Flowers!

Natural objects: Flowers

This lesson was presented after a science lesson where the learners had to collect flowers outside and dissect them. We discussed the different parts of a flower and made a diagram to indicate the various parts.

Learning outcomes:

  • Use various materials to create flowers.
  • Working together as a group to decorate our “April Showers – Bring Me Flowers” wall.

Assessment standards:

  • Did students manage to use different material?
  • Did they copy the examples or did they use their own creativity?

Materials:

  • Examples of flowers.
  • Information on flowers and pictures of flower parts.
  • String, cardboard, glue, pipe cleaners, cloth, sparkles

Practical activities:

    Introduction:


      Step 1:

      Talk about the community and ask why we need or want to have flowers and trees in a community.

      Step 2:

      Show examples of flowers and talk about the different parts of flowers for example: petals, leaves, stem.

    Presentation:


      Step 3:

      Show the learners the “April Showers – Bring Me Flowers” wall and discuss what type of flowers they are going to make.

      Step 4:

      Put all the material on the tables (paper plates, scissors, glue, glitter, paint, water markers, cork, coins, buttons, material, pipe cleaners)

      Step 5:

      Learners create their own flowers.

    Conclusion:


      Step 6:

      Stick the flowers to the “April Showers – Bring Me Flowers” wall.

      Step 7:

      Tidy up time.

Pre-knowledge that the learners had for this lesson:

    Had discussions about the community before.

Formulate of a problem (concept to be taught):

    Creating two and three-dimensional flowers by using a range of material.

Questions and instruction, which you will pose to the learners:

    Step 1:

      Sit on the carpet

      Talk about the community and ask why we need or want to have flowers and trees in a community.

      Why do we need flowers?

      Who has a garden?

      Who likes flowers?

      What type of flower do you like the best?

    Step 2:

      Show examples of flowers and talk about the different parts of flowers, for example: petals, leaves, stem.

      Which parts of the flower do you know the name of?

      What is this part called?

      What is its function?

    Step 3:

      Show the learners the “April Showers – Bring Me Flowers” wall and discuss what types of flowers they are going to make.

      Why have we created this board?

      Where do you want to place your flower?

    Step 4:

      Go and sit down at your desk please.

      Take any type of material that you like and start creating your flower.

      Put all the material on the tables.

    Step 5:

      Students create their own flowers.

    Step 6:

      If you are finished with your flower, you may bring it to me and we can put it up on the wall together.

      Stick the flowers to the “April Showers – Bring Me Flowers” wall.

    Step 7:

      Tidy up time.

      Put the material away please.

Conclusion:

    The learners were very creative and produced spectacular flowers.

    Only three learners out of the group of 15 modeled the examples, the others made up their own creative design.
