I do a theme on Artists with a 5th grade class. I choose different artists and examples of their work. During circle, we discuss the artist and his work and the technique used. We then recreate the technique in our own work. For example: We did self-portraits like Van Gogh using colored joint compound to mimic his heavy brushstrokes.
