Title - Monet's Waterlilies
By - Stephanie Slatner
Primary Subject - Art
Grade Level - K-6
Number of Students: 20

Discipline Area: Art Production and Art History

Concept/Goal: To learn about Monet and experience his work.

Activity: Students will use watercolor paint and torn paper to make their own water lilies painting.

Tools; Special Equipment; Supplies: watercolors, water, paper, glue, and paintbrushes

Lesson Design:

This is a two part lesson where the first class we will talk a lot about Monet and look at his water lily paintings. We will talk about Monet's life and what he did. We will start on the first day with art history and then we will get our ground cover of watercolors on the paper using blues and purples.

The next class time we will use to talk about water lilies in more detail and what they look like. Then we will tear paper to make the water lilies and anything that might be living in our pond.

Anticipatory Set/Motivation: I will have my cooperating teacher and I start a dialogue about Monet and what a fantastic painter he was. We will talk about how we wish that we knew him and that we want to try to do something like his work. In the dialogue we will throw in facts about his life and his work and talk about picture examples of his work.

Modeling/Demonstration: I will re-demonstrate how to rinse the brush before switching colors. I will show them what we are going to do this class period and what we will start with next time. I will hopefully be able to find the book about Monet's Garden in the library to read with them at the culmination of the project. But I want to make sure that we have more time for closure and look and talk sessions at the end of class the second week.

Cleanup: Each table should have all brushes in the water cups and their papers should be on the drying rack when I call their tables to bring them to me and then line up.
