Title - Introduction to Hatching and Cross-Hatching
By - Lesley Fentiman
Primary Subject - Art
Secondary Subjects - Math
Grade Level - 4-6

Note:
Children create an artwork in this lesson using straight lines. They make the artwork using a ruler, an HB graphite pencil, and colored pencils or markers.
Outcomes and Objectives:
After completion of activities, children will be able to:
    • draw straight lines in any direction
    • recognize horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines
    • recognize the difference between hatching and shading
    • recognize the difference between hatching and cross-hatching
    • recognize the importance of line in an artwork
    • recognize the importance of color in an artwork
Equipment:
  • Art/Cartridge paper
  • HB pencil
  • a selection of colored pencils
  • a selection of marker pens
Procedure:
  • Give children a piece of art/cartridge paper and ask them to fill the paper by drawing horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. The lines can intersect. A picture or pattern can be made. When the lines have been draw in HB pencil, then ask the children to make the lines colored in the following way:
      __HB pencil or black
      |colored
      /HB or black
      \colored

  • This is to give the younger children some structure. The lesson can also be carried out using own choice of colors.
  • If lines have intersected to form a recognizable shape, such as square, diamond or triangle, then any shading must be done as lines (hatching - lines one way or cross-hatching - lines in opposite directions.)
Conclusion:
    Display artworks.
    • Some interesting, imaginative artworks can be achieved.
    • Lesson can also be completed with a computer drawing program.
