Concept Statement: Artist’s books are for more than just reading.

Illustration – a picture or diagram that helps make something clear or attractive

Cast Type Books – The first mass production for books that uses cast metal blocks with separate letters enabling the rapid printing of both multiple copies and multiple titles of books.

Sequence – a continuous or connected series

Incident – something dependent on or subordinate to something else of greater or principal importance

Binding – to apply the parts of the cover, to fasten together, to protect, strengthen, or decorate by a band or binding

Cognitive – Students will make a book that follows a sequential order of events and presents an understandable message.

Affective – Students will create a book that shows their feelings about the subject they choose to discuss.

Psychomotor – Students will generate a handmade book with superior craftsmanship.

Activity or Product – Each student will make a multi-media handmade artist’s book using either a narrative story or a poem.

Supplies – Watercolor Paper, Mat board, Paint, Printing Materials, Drawing Supplies, Fabrics scraps, Ribbon, String, Found Objects

Demonstration of Techniques, Tools, and Materials -

I will first show them the PowerPoint of different artists’ books and how each binding is different. I will have examples of some of them to show and some I will talk about their construction. We will discuss the importance of incorporating every part of the bookmaking process in conjunction with the story or idea that is being portrayed. Every part of the book should help to reinforce the meaning of the book.

I will show them a few of my examples and how to construct the basic bindings for books, but I will encourage them to experiment because there is no wrong way to do this. Each person’s book should be unique.

This should be a multimedia project that must incorporate at least 2 media on each page. Every part of the book should be taken into consideration and craftsmanship is very important. The backs and the fronts of the pages should be addressed in some way.

Requirements:

-At least 2 drawing media

-At least 1 non-traditional media

-At least 1 painting media

-At least 2 media on each page

-Must have front and back of pages completed

-Must be at least 4″ x 5″

Materials Distribution/ Cleanup – Materials will be available on particular days and the students are responsible for keeping track of them and cleaning them up in time, 10 minute warning will be given for clean-up time. (Painting will have to be done all in one day.)
