Animal Adventure

GRADE LEVEL: Kindergarten

MATERALS NEEDED: construction papers in various colors, scissors, glue, markers, crayons, tissue paper, magazines, animal patterns

NUMBER OF CLASS HOURS: 1 hour (20 minutes for discussion; 20 minutes for project; 20 minutes for clean-up, discussion, and oral quiz over vocabulary terms.)

CONCEPT/TITTLE: Animal Adventure. Students will create their own animal using construction paper and other media types after hearing and seeing the illustrations from the following books: Roosters Off to See the World by Eric Carle, Aesop’s Fables: The Hare and the Tortoise, and Aesop’s Fables, after which they will display their work.

OBJECTIVES: Link art with language arts. Instruction in: collage; art and literary terms; develop an understanding of art and language arts. (art standards 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and language arts standards .)

MOTIVATIONAL TOOLS: Enthusiasm about art and reading/books. Allow students to share personal stories. Discuss ways in which art, and reading are linked together.

PRESENTATION AND DEMONSTRATION: Demonstrate the making of the animal, how to tear construction pieces; define vocabulary terms; provide cautions; show examples of completed project. Visuals: refer to visuals used as motivation.

PROCESS:

1. We will read Aesop’s Fables: The Hare and the Tortoise.

2. After reading the book we will discuss book, highlighting the illustrations from Rooster’s off to see the World.

3. Explain making of the animal to children, provide cautions (over use of glue, etc)

4. Students will then pick a pattern and they will be asked to gather various colors of construction paper.

5. Students will tear pieces to form an animal as to show the illustrations in the book.

6. Students will continue to add layers using other types of media if desired.

7. Students will clean up their area.

8. Students will discuss their artworks and review terms.

9. Students will take short oral quiz over terms.

ASSESSMENT: Display the artwork; discuss student’s pieces; discuss terms; give each table a word search with the terms and the table that completes the word search first gets a prize.

LIST OF TERMS RELATED TO THE PROBLEM:

Illustrations- Material used to clarify or explain text.

Collage- An artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface.

Hare- An animal that has long hind legs, a short tail, and a divided upper lip. It is a timid animal, moves swiftly by leaps.

Tortoise- An animal that has horny toothless jaws and a bony or leathery shell into which the head, limbs, and tail can be withdrawn in most species.

Arrange- To put into order.

Pattern- An artistic or decorative design.
