Title - Karo--forever!

This is a sensory approach to all thematic units.

You can create a construction shaped pattern to all units that you can come up with. The last one I did was a brown starfish made of construction paper with my "Ocean" unit. You just need Karo syrup, the clear one, and the children can smear it all over their pattern. You can use white paper and color the syrup with food coloring if you want, but it will only work on thicker paper. The Karo dries with a smooth, gloss-like finish that resembles stained glass. (especially if you use different colors on white paper). The kids love to smear it and lick it also. The smearing needs to be a thin coat because if your climate is humid it will "melt" and drip if it is too thick. What I had my students do to the starfish after they smoothed on the syrup and washed their hands was to sprinkle some sand on the syprup-ed starfish to create a more textured effect to their artwork. Be creative with the Karo-syrup because it is naturally sticky like glue - (we Karo-ed lady bug patterns last year and then added hole-punched black dots right in the syrup and made them look cool. I used red-colored Karo on white paper and then added the black dots. The stuff is so sticky when wet you can even add pipe cleaner or other attractive things while it is wet and they will stick like with glue when the project is wet.
