Title - Expression Through Art
By - Sharon Hargis
Subject - Art
Grade Level - 4-12
MATERIALS: Clipped names of male and female characters, settings (time and place) for prompts
Fine art transparency (time period to fit clippings)
Pens
Pretty paper
Music (chosen to fit time period)
Overhead

PROCEDURE: Art transparency shown (overhead) to whole group to set atmosphere. Each individual student chooses two characters (male and female), setting information (time, place, scenery, etc.) for writing prompts. As background music plays, students compose a narrative or descriptive writing inspired by the prompts from these various mediums. This activity is also excellent to follow-up a lesson on fantasy, myth, fairy tale, or historical writing such as the Medieval or Renaissance period.

NOTE: For the younger students, reading fantasy or fairy tales a few days in advance is helpful. Also, don't forget to publish!
